The University of Split was established in 1974, unifying various institutions of higher education existing in Split since the 1960s. It is today composed of 11 faculties, an academy and a number of other institutions.

The symbols of the University of Split are prescribed in Articles 5 and 7 of the University Statutes, Statut Sveučilišta u Splitu (pročišćeni tekst), last amended on 27 February 2009 (text). The symbols have been in use since 2003.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the golden "arms" of the University in the centre.
The University uses circular "arms" depicting Ivan
Meštrović's sculpture History of Croats (presentation), surrounded by the name in Croatian or Latin. The use of the flag with the Latin text was not confirmed. Meštrović's sculpture, elected for the emblem of the University in 1974, was made in the 1930s; intended for the Museum of Knin, it was set, as a marble
scupture, in the Royal Court park in Belgrade, where it still stands. A bronze copy was erected in 1970 in front of the
University of Zagreb while a copy was made in 1978 for the Meštrović Museum in Split, and several more since them shipped to Zagreb, Pittsburgh, etc.
The flag is also used vertically (photo, photo), with the inscription in Glagolitic script (reading "Povijest Hrvata" - History of Croats) on the slab the mother is holding in her lap.
