When Giuseppi Bottasini stepped down as director Mark Sensen proposed that a director's flag be devised to thank him. From that start, a series of officers' flags were soon developed:
This proposal is based on the FOTW flag, but square with white and blue bands
equal, a yellow border all around and small yellow border within the white and
blue. In the upper part of the white band his initials "GB" in black.
Mark Sensen, 23 July 1997
The idea was that each of the positions would have an "emeritus" personal
flag that would be the same as the official flag for the office held defaced
with some personal emblem of owner's choice.

I also made a design for our new "president": like the latter, but
proportions 2:3, bigger stars and without initials.
Mark Sensen, 23 July 1997
I had some other designs in mind; for our Vice-director like the proposal for
Giuseppe's flag, but without initials and without the outer border.
Mark Sensen, 27 July 1997
For the editors almost the same but the "inner border" counterchanged blue
and white.

I am not quite sure, but I think that in the end, the listmaster's flag was
made same as the director's, but with the red double border instead of the
yellow.

Red for blood, of course... ;-E

This is the personal rank flag for the Keyword Coordinator, an office held by
Ole Andersen at the time (not terribly official, but check
ed-keywd.html). Devised 23 December 1999.

I made another such flag, for the Clickable Maps Coordinator (myself), using
the standard colors of FotW maps.

"Giffers" are the artists on FOTW who draw the flags, usually making 'gif' files as a result. There is no known connection to the Swiss commune of the same name.
The giffer's flag is still under consideration. Some suggestions are:

It appears in looking at all of the editorial variant flags that the green
squared inner outline version has not yet been claimed. So, I present it on
behalf of all of our giffing community.

I redrew this one with the templates from the emeritus designs: Slightly
different shades and different width of border. I then did the thing again with
the green against the blue, rather than against the white, but that has its own
drawbacks. I don't know. In the one you have a lighter colour on a white field
and a darker colour on the blue. On the other the lightest two colours of the
border meet, and the darkest two meet. Neither seems ideal. Which scheme do we
take, or is there an even better approach?
