The municipality of Argamasilla de Calatrava (6,013 inhabitants in 2024; 16,594 ha) is located 37 km south-west of Ciudad Real.

According to the study Gavira Tomás (see below) “Argamasilla de Calatrava has been linked from its origin to the Order of Calatrava, as can be easily deduced from its name”. And he explains that the town "in its beginnings was a small fort, in whose shelter the first settlers settled, founded after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) around a tower of which there are currently no traces". "In 1216 the mastership of the Order was transferred to the Sacred Convent, in Aldea del Rey, near Argamasilla and it must have been then that a settlement nucleus was created, within the general settlement policy carried out by the Order". In fact, his name already appears as an Encomienda incorporated into the Calatrava Worker at the beginning of the 14th century. "The town of Argamasilla de Calatrava finally achieved its independence as a municipality in 1588, after a brief period in which it was incorporated into the Partido de Almodóvar del Campo",

Symbols of Argamasilla de Calatrava

The Ministry of Finance and Public Administrations has issued through the Official Gazette of Castilla-La Mancha the Order granting the municipal flag to the City Council of Argamasilla de Calatrava, requested in the plenary session last December. The description of it, according to the document, is “flag divided into four quarters, arranged in a cross: the two upper and lower central ones, in red, each with a yellow castle; the lateral quarters, next to the flagpole and the leaf, in white, each one with a crowned red lion. In the center of the flag, on a white circle, the cross of Calatrava in red”. It is a conception that is due to the study commissioned by the Consistory to the prestigious specialist in the field Ignacio Gavira Tomás, to provide Argamasilla de Calatrava with a municipal flag. This member of the Royal Academy of Heraldry and Genealogy of Matritense and the Spanish Society of Vexillologies considered the existence of other symbols that reflect the history of the town, with which citizens identify, such as the traditional coat of arms. Specifically, the cross of the Order of Calatrava, to which the municipality belonged, and the symbols of the Crown of Castile, such as the golden castle and the gules lion, forming a border around the cross. “What we gain with this flag is that these symbols that are so much ours can wave alongside the banners of our region, our country and the European Union in public spaces and official acts, an emblem of which we feel much more proud as a municipality that we are. ”, explains Mayor Jesús Manuel Ruiz Valle. It should be noted that the dimensions that the cloth is going to have, rectangular in shape, will have a 2:3 ratio, that is, one high by 1.5 wide, which are the proportions of the Spanish flag and in terms of colors uses red, yellow and white.

The current heraldic shield "it was approved, following a report from the Royal Academy of History, by Decree 716/1974, of March 7, and published in the Official State Gazette on March 14, 1974". The operative part of this decree is as follows:

“Single article. – The City Council of Argamasilla de Calatrava, of the province of Ciudad Real, is authorized to adopt its municipal heraldic shield, which will be organized as follows, in accordance with the opinion of the Royal Academy of History: In silver field, the Cross of Calatrava, gules. Border of four compositions, two of gules with the castle of gold, and two of silver with the lion of gules. Stamped with Royal Crown”.
