Introduction

Akademischer Turnbund nowadays is the umbrella organisation of academic athletics clubs. Its members bear no proper colours nor do they show fencing. That was different in the 19th century.
The flags of all its rowing squads (German: Ruder Riegen) have usually a few elements in common:

  • they are white parted by a black centred cross, either plain, fimbriated or cotized
  • they show the athletics cross as the symbol of the German athletics movement usually in red
  • they display in canton either the colours of the club or fraternity or black-red-golden (=yellow), the colours of the movement. Those became German colours after the end of WW1.
  • they display the circle of the club or fraternity, usually in black, for further details click: German rowing clubs main page
  • Some members of ATB but not all are also members of DRV.

ATV is either "Akademischer Turnverein" or "Akademische Turnverbindung"
