Meaning:
Since 1513 silver ore was discovered in the Lordship of Waldenburg, which had been a possession of the Lords of Schönburg. Until 1517 the mining town of Hohenstein was founded, which gained city rights in 1521. Besides silver also copper, arsenic, gold and iron were prospected. At the end of the century mining was replaced by weaving. In 1788 there had been more than 400 master craftsmen of weaving in the city. In 1679 Ernstthal was founded as a settlement for weavers, which gained the rights of a market town in 1694. During the 19th century a powerful textiles industry developed in the town. Town and city were united in 1898. The saint is St. Christopher, patron saint of Hohenstein bearing Jesus Christ. The fir is taken from the town seal of Ernstthal. Hammer and mallet are symbolising mining. The shaking hands are symbolsing the unification of both entities in 1898. The silver parts are realised as grey on the banners.

The banner with bannerhead is in use at least since 1992, the other banner since 2015. The arms probably were adopted in 1898.
