Shield Azure a crowned lion rampant double queued Or, tongued Sable.
Meaning:
The arms had been already used on the oldest city seal, known since 1350. The lion is a differentiation of that one of the Counts of Schwarzburg, who granted city rights in 1326 and ruled the city until 1918. The pattern remained basically the same but changed in details, such as the tinctures of tongue and claws and the posture.
