Heppenheim is twinned with the French town of Le Chesnay, located near Versailles. In the late 1980, the municipal flag of Le Chesnay (green with the municipal coat of arms in the middle) and the flag of Heppenheim (horizontal version) were flown permanently, along with the French national flag, on the rond-point d'Heppenheim (Heppenheim rotunda). The hoisting of the flag seems to have disappeared in the early 1990s, probably after a change in the municipal administration, and the three flag poles have remained sadly empty since then.

Shield parted per fess; above Azure a demi-lion issuant barry of five of Argent and Gules, crowned and armed Or, holding a sword Argent hilted Or in pale by his right forepaw; beneath parted per pale, at dexter Argent a facetted cross fitchy Gules, at sinister Gules a 6-spokes wheel Argent.
Meaning:
The lion in the upper half is the lion of Hessen, the cross is the symbol of the Lorsch Abbey and the wheel is the symbol of the Archbishopric of Mainz. Heppenheim was a dominion of the Lorsch Abbey until 1232, when it became a dominion of the Archbishops of Mainz. Since 1803 the city belongs to Hessen.
The arms were granted in 1913.
