Oberammergau Coat of Arms

Meaning:
Shield Azure, parted per pale by a cross Or with a cloth Argent hung on the horizontal cross bar, issuant from base two hands of oath Argent.
Cross and cloth are alluding to the local festival, the Oberammergau Passion Play, performing the martyrdom of Jesus Christ, performed mostly in the last year of a decade ever since 1680. In 1633 about 80 inhabitants were killed by the Plague. The inhabitants vowed to perform a play, if they would be liberated from the Plague. Since then no more inhabitants died. The hands of oath are alluding to those vows.

The arms were approved on 18 August 1959 by Minister of Interior of Bayern. The banner probably has never been approved officially.
