Meaning:
Thum was mentioned as a market town in 1456, as a city in 1539. It belonged to the Lordship of Wolkenstein. In 1999 the municipalities of Herold and Jahnsbach were incorporated. The base quarter displays the former arms of Thum, which changed in details. Otto Hupp painted the roofs blue. The arms are based on a court seal. Municipal seals from the 17th century displayed a virgin issuant with coronet, hammer and cross. The herald (German: Herold) displays the arms of the namesake former municipality. The arms on the tabard are those of the Lords of Waldenburg, former local rulers. The tree is said to be the "Tree of Life" and is taken from a local seal of Jahnsbach from 1593, where the tree was displayed together with hammer and mallet. The chief quarter displays the symbols of mining, which had been an important business line in all parts of the city for a long time.
