Shield Azure, a woman issuant Argent with blindfold of the same, holding a pair of scales Or by her risen sinister hand and a sword in bend by her dester hand, in dexter chief a weaving shuttle Or above and a bunch of grapes of the same below.
Meaning:
The village was first mentioned in 1222 as a possession of the Bishopric of Meißen. It gained market and city rights in 1668 but nevertheless it was considereed to be a mere market town. A papermill and textiles industries had been important business lines. A local brewery was changed to one of Germany´s biggest distilleries in 1872. The woman on the arms is Justicia, the goddess of justice, recognisable by her attributes blindfold, sword and scales. The current arms are based on local seals, displaying the goddess standing on a weaving shuttle and a wine barrel. City rights were confirmed in 1969. On occasion of the 750-years-anniversary in 1972 the arms were changed by the government of the GDR. The shield was blue, charged with two golden grain ears in circle, superimposed by a weaving shuttle in base and a part of a cogwheel in chief, all golden. In centre had been a golden vine leaf charged with a flaming red initial "W". The ears were symbolising agriculture, the leaf distillery, the cogwheel metal industry and the shuttle textiles industry. The old arms were restored in 1994 with minor changes. The position of the shuttle changed and the barrel was replaced by a bunch of grapes.
