The municipality of Coronel Vivida (2&,666 inhabitants in 2017; 68,442 ha) is
located 400 km south-west of Curitiba.
Coronel Vivida was first known as
Barro Preto (Black Clay). The name was coined by brothers Pedro and João Poleze,
two of the town's founders, who once killed a big tapir and retrieved it from a
black, muddy swamp.
Barro Preto was renamed to Coronel Vivida as a reference
to Colonel Firmino Teixeira Baptista, from Palmas, who used to say "Que vivida!",
the stuttering form of "Que vida!" (What a life!).
The municipality of
Coronel Vivida was established on 14 December 1954, separating from Mangueirinha.

The flag and
arms of Coronel Vivida are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 506 promulgated on 3
September 1972. The symbols were deigned by Arcinoé Antonio Peixoto de Faria.
The flag is divided in green quarters formed by three horizontal white
stripes superimposed with red stripes starting from the angle of a white
triangle placed along the hoist and charged with the municipal coat of arms.
The coat of arms featured on the flag symbolizes the municipal government, while
the white triangle on which it is applied represents the town proper, as the
seat of the municipality. The stripes symbolize the spread of the municipal
power to all the parts of the territory.
