About ELMA

Empresa Lineas Maritimas Argentinas S.A. Formed in 1961 by the merger of Flota Mercante del Estado and Flota Argentina de Navegación de Ultramar, ELMA was the Argentine National line which folded after a series of losses between 1992-1997.

Flag

The light blue flag had a white saltire surmounted by a vertical dark blue foul anchor [see image] being shown by Josef Nüsse. Brown 1982 and 1995 show a plain black anchor without cable but as the flag appears to be a combination of those of the formation companies I favour the Nüsse version.

Confirmed by 1962 brochure shown on Maritime Timetable Images site:

http://timetableimages.com/maritime/temp/elma/elmab02.jpg

at least as shown by flag image on funnel.

The database ‘Maritiem Digitaal’ (Dutch) [confirmes the color of the anchor]: Just type “elma” or “staatsrederij” (i.e. state-owned shipping company) in the search box and click “Zoeken”.

Also put up by the Amsterdam museum, item S.6483(2148) measuring 146 cm by 221 cm shows a dark blue anchor, thereby confirming Neale’s hunch.
