About the district

The municipality of Chacabuco (38,418 inhabitants in 2010) is located 220 km west of Buenos Aires.

Chacabuco was established by a Decree issued on 5 August 1865, as Guardia Nacional. In 1870, however, official documents mentioned the settlement as Chacabuco. In 1889n, the Chacabuco railway station was inaugurated, which boosted the development of the settlement, which was granted the title of "ciudad" on 18 June 1918.
A local legend says that the town was originally known as Las Estacas (The Stakes). Not recorded in any official document, this name probably refers to the design of the town according to a grid plan and the original delimitation of plots with wooden stakes.

Chacabuco is named for the battle fought on 12 February 1817 on Chacabuco Hill. The Army of the Andes, commanded by José de San Martín
Miguel, Estanislao Soler and Bernardo O'Higgins, defeated the Chile Royal Army commanded by Rafael Maroto Yserns. While only 12 patriots were killed and another 120 were injured, casualties were high on the Spanish side: 500 were killed, 600 captured and another 170 injured.
The victory allowed the patriots to enter Santiago on 14 February 1817 and O'Higgins was named Supreme Director of Chile.

Description of the flag

The flag of Chacabuco is horizontally into two equal stripes, blue on top and red on bottom. In the center appears a circular emblem composed, in the blue stripe, of a yellow, five-rayed half-sun, and in the lower part, of a black half-wheel with a silver rim filled in green. The wheel is superimposed in the center with a black quill and ink-pot.

The flag was unveiled on 25 May 2019 during the celebration of the 209th anniversary of the Revolution of May and officially hoisted on 5 August 2019 during the celebration of the 154th anniversary of the town of Chacabuco.
The flag, designed by students (6th year) of Instituto Santa Ana, was selected by the Municipal Council among the three finalists of a public contest chosen by a people's vote.
The flag uses the colors of the municipal coat of arms.

In the emblem's upper part, the rising sun represents the morning rise of the sun over the fields of Chacabuco. The sun is a symbol of faith and belief that the sun shines for everyone, without any distinction based on religious and political ideology. The sun is a metaphoric emblem, being always present even when not visible.
Out of he five rays, four represent the four settlements that form the municipality, while the fifth represents its other components. The sun disc alludes to union and cooperation between all the components of the municipality.
The rays also represents a rotating mill, recalling the town's traditional and main source of income, which boosted further growth and economical and social development. Yellow represents maize and wheat, as well as the chacay flower [Discaria chacaya (G. Don) Tortosa], the town's namesake.

In the emblem's lower part, the wheel represents transport companies that made possible the distribution of primary products from agriculture and elaborated products from industry. It also represents the wheels of machines used in agriculture.
Black is a symbol of the inhabitants' austerity and strong-mindedness.
The rims are shaped like railways, representing the emergence of Chacabuco, grain trade, and demographic increase.
Silver is a symbol of truth and integrity. Green symbolizes the train and trucks' voyages through the pampa's fertile lands.
