The Courier Record made articles on both the town flag during it's proposal stage, and it's adoption.

OFFICIAL FLAG PROPOSED FOR BLACKSTONE
Former Mayor submits design for Town review

Blackstone is 135-years-old and doesn’t have an official Town flag, but that may soon change.

Former Mayor Billy Coleburn recently informed Mayor Ben Green that a Blackstone flag was something he had planned to propose years ago and certainly before leaving office Dec. 31, 2022.

The project got sidetracked, he said, and then he began being teased by County Administrator Ted Costin, who pointed-out that Crewe and Burkeville have flags in his office at the courthouse but none from Blackstone. Coleburn said that friendly jab got his “competitive juices” flowing and put the project back on the front burner.

Coleburn and Courier-Record award-winning Graphic Designer Jeff Martin collaborated on the project last Fall and have produced a design, says Coleburn, that’s consistent with current Town branding, official Town welcome signs, and street name signs in the Historic Business District downtown.

Coleburn said the image of American Bald Eagle has been added to the top to symbolize the community’s close ties to Fort Pickett, its new relationship with the U. S. Dept. of State’s Foreign Affairs Security Training Center (FASTC) at Fort Pickett, and the upcoming 250th Anniversary of America’s Revolution, which began in 1776.

There are 35 golden stripes on the proposed flag, Coleburn noted, to signify that this year — the year of its potential adoption — is the 135th year of Blackstone’s existence as an incorporated town. Blackstone was incorporated on Feb. 23, 1888.

Mayor Green has referred the proposed flag design to Council’s Buildings & Properties Committee, chaired by Councilwoman Carolyn Williams.

Coleburn said that if Council approves the design as presented, he’d like to donate the first flag to the Town at his own expense. He’d also sell a flag at cost to the Town if it would like to donate one to Nottoway County.

Now Flying Above Town Hall

After being an incorporated town for 135 years, Blackstone now has its own official flag.

After a favorable recommendation by Town Council’s Buildings & Properties Committee, the full Council recently approved the design presented by former Mayor Billy Coleburn (2006-22), who gave the flag to the Town as a parting gift. Coleburn also is giving the Town a flag to present to Nottoway County, which has flags of Crewe and Burkeville in the County Administrator’s Office but not Blackstone.

Coleburn, editor of the Courier- Record, and Courier- Record award-winning Graphic Designer Jeff Martin collaborated on the project last Fall. The design is consistent with current Town branding, official Town welcome signs, and street name signs in the Historic Business District downtown.

The image of an American Bald Eagle was added to the design to symbolize the community’s close ties to Fort Pickett, its new relationship with the U. S. Dept. of State’s Foreign Affairs Security Training Center (FASTC) at Fort Pickett, and to celebrate the upcoming 250th Anniversary of America’s Revolution, which began in 1776.

There are 35 golden stripes on the new flag to signify that this year — the year of the flag’s adoption — is the 135th year of Blackstone’s existence as an incorporated town. Blackstone was incorporated on Feb. 23, 1888. Coleburn this week said he appreciates the support and encouragement from Mayor Ben Green and the new Council.

The seal shows a ring with the town and state name, along with two stars. In the center of the ring is a horizontally divided field with the Schwartz Tavern on top, and three dark-leaf tobacco plants at the bottom.
