Description of the flag

As part of a Sixth Grade Leadership program at Fred Moodry Intermediate School, classmates Hunter Miles, Ella Sullivan, and Christian Lanes designed a flag as a community service project because Anaconda had no flag. Three slightly different flag designs were subjected to a community vote via a survey in the Anaconda Leader newspaper. Of the 255 respondents, 228 chose the flag with a dark blue field. According to Maggie Swanson, a teacher at the designers’ school, the center of the flag shows a smoke stack to represent Anaconda’s history of smelting and has a ring the color of the copper, which the smelter made. The hills marked with a “C” and an “A” represent Anaconda Central and Anaconda High, from a time when the town had two high schools. Finally, the blue background is for the lakes and streams surrounding Anaconda. The flag was adopted by a unanimous vote of the Anaconda–Deer Lodge County commission on July 17, 2024.
