The winner of North Newton's flag design contest, Blayne Stump, was announced at the City Council meeting last evening. Blayne (left) said his design is inspired by the historical development of the prairie and the state of Kansas, known as the Sunflower State. The sunflower on the flag serves as a directional symbol and represents the state itself. The warm gold and brown colors represent the richness and warmth of Kansas wheat fields, highlighting the region's strong agriculture heritage. The design also includes a symbol that serves a dual purpose: it resembles a compass rose or cardinal direction, and can also be interpreted as a sunflower. This symbol was chosen to honor the Mennonite immigrants who settled in the area.
Blayne graduated from Bethel College in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and an emphasis in ceramics. He currently works for Legacy Bank in Wichita and is a citizen of North Newton.
Conrade Insurance sponsored the design contest. Caleb Good (center) and Chris Conrade (right) presented Blayne the $500 prize winnings.

The flag was the result of a flag contest which was announced on July 15, with a deadline on August 2. Voting was held from September 9 until the 23rd, where residents could vote from 16 different flags. The winner was declared on October 15, where design #1 was declared the winner.
