According to the April 8, 1981 issue of The Day, the flag of Groton was adopted on the night of April 7 by the town council after a flag design contest. The flag was designed by Donald R. Berger. This contest had fourteen entries, and five were recommended to the council by the Groton Arts Committee. The background as adopted was described as being ivory or off-white.
