Sabancı University (website) was established in 1979 by the Sabancı Foundation (Sabancı Vakfı - VAKSA, founded in 1974).
The university is composed of 2 Faculties (Engineering and Natural Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences), and of the Sabancı Business School.
Hacı Ömer Sabancı (1906-1966) is the founder of the first companies to constitute the basis on which the industrial firms that make up the present-day Sabancı Group were built.
Hacı Ömer Sabancı was born in Akçakaya, a small village in the province of Kayseri in Central Anatolia. He lost his father when he was only five and, at the age of fourteen, left his native village to try his fortune in the Adana cotton region, travelling the whole distance of 450 kms on foot.
He began his new life in Adana as a labourer in the cotton plantations but after only one or two years he had saved enough to set up a modest commercial enterprise. His remarkable initiative, far-sightedness and unflinching resolution added one link after another to the chain of successes built up over the years. He was responsible for the foundation of enterprises such as Marsa, Akbank and Bossa, companies which constituted the first steps towards the creation of the Sabancı Group, now the largest private holding in Turkey.
