KESK (Kamu Emekçileri Sendikaları Konfederasyonu - Confederation of
Public Employees Workers Unions), established on 8 December 1995, is an
umbrella organization grouping 11 public employees workers unions.
Membership is c. 240,000.
KESK, of leftist orientation, is a frontal opponent to the regime set up
by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and its party, AKP. The union organized several strikes against "AKP's fascist power" and supported the Kurdish claims.
Several members of KESK were arrested and sentenced to jail for alleged
support to terrorist organizations.
In the aftermath of the aborted coup of 15 July 2016, some 4,000 members
of KESK were fired for alleged ties with the Fethullahist Terrorist
Organization (FETÖ, the name given to the Gülen movement by the Turkish
government). On 21 December 2016, KESK organized a march for the
liberation and reintegration of all its fired members, which arrived in
Ankara five days later.
