Tavini Huiraatira (Serving People) was established in 1977 as Front de
Libération de la Polynésie (FLP - Polynesia People's Front), renamed in
1983 to its current name.
Leading alliances of independentist and/or leftist parties, Temaru was a
fierce opponent to Gaston Flosse and his party, Tahoeraa Huiraatira in the 2004-2011 years. This resulted
in a great political instability, Temaru serving as President of
French Polynesia for 4 months in 2004, in 2005-2006, for 5 months in
2007-2008, for 9 months in 2009, and in 2011-2013. Temaru was also
President of the Polynesian Assembly in 2008-2009 and 2010-2011.
Tavini Huiraatira could keep only 8 out of its 11 seats at the
Polynesian Assembly following the territorial elections of May 2018.
