Agua Prieta's coat of arms is possibly the oldest in the state. Its proportions are 66 x 100 in vertical format, being designed by Arturo Mendoza who proposed it to the council along with the monument to the flag at Plaza Azueta on 13 January 1943. Description according to a document provided by the council:

In the first third, an arch measuring to 180 degrees is found, and from its central axis it occupies 70% of the rectangle's width; being centered upon it is a profile view of an eagle with its wings extended, with the head facing to the right, standing over a cactus and devouring a serpent. Below this national symbol are the words "Agua Prieta" and the number "1899" which corresponds to the year of foundation of the city.

In the central third and to the center of the rectangle's height, in transversal form, the city of Agua Prieta is located geographically in the Northeast part of the State of Sonora. The state of Chihuahua is to the right and of Arizona, U.S., visible to its limits with Sonora; they are manifested in the color white; the state of Sonora in yellow up to its coastline; while the Gulf of California is in Blue.

Of the lower central part of the rectangle, this is divided into two equal fields, from left to right, bounded only by an arch of a point whose diameter corresponds to the total width of the rectangle. In the field on the left, it is lined by eleven wavy lines in blue and white which represent the flowing water of the Agua Prieta River, meanwhile the field on the right is invaded to its limits in black color which represents the stagnant water, cloudy and dark which gave origin to the Ópata word "Bachicuy", which means "Agua Prieta" [Dark Water].

The 26th of January in the same year, the Municipal Council of Agua Prieta unanimously approved the coat of arms of the municipality, which was marked in Document No. 2246, Record 1-27.
