Overview

Arló is a large village in ózd district of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county,in northern part of Hungary.
The settlement was founded in the 11th century, when it was the property of the Miskolc family. The first surviving written mention of it (Arlo) dates back to 1268.
The first inhabitants were engaged in logging and charcoal burning. In the 17th century, Roma immigrated to the settlement, today they make up half of the village's population.
The village's population began to grow steadily from the time of industrial settlements due to the proximity of the factories in ózd and Borsodnádasd. The crisis of heavy industry also affected Arlo, and the population began to decline in the 1990s, as many people migrated to Miskolc and other cities.

The Flag

Its flag is white with two vertical stripes placed at the fly, blue and yellow. The coat of arms is placed at hoist side by one-third of the length. Ratio is 1:2.
The flag was adopted by Local Government Decree No. 16/1999. (IX. 27.) issued on 27 September 1999.

The flag images in this legal document are very poor renderings, when compared with the Wikimedia Commons version, namely when it comes to the clipart of the coat of arms, shown on a very light purplish background inset (and overall smaller). The shades of blue and yellow in this legal document are visibly different from each other in the two versions of the flag, surely unintentionally, and the coat of arms inset, in spite of overdrawn lines and arrows architect-style, is visibly off-centered.
The horizontal flag, for hoisting on a vertical pole/staff/mast, is shown at the bottom of the page, under the heading "Zászló:", and show only one measurement: coat of arms one third off the hoist. The other numbers are absent and one would otherwise guess that’s because these two versions are indeed identical except for the orientation of the coat of arms, (but why then include that "1/3" alone?).
However the diagram for the horizontal flag, even though unlabelled, is clearly less oblong than 1:2. That is surely one more inconsistency in this graphic annex, very poor overall, but might be grounds to claim that the legal document’s imagery determine a ~3:5 flag for upright hoisting.
Annex 3 is not separatly credited, but seems to be the handiwork of «Kovács Ferenc grafikus, a Magyar Heraldikai és Genealógiai Társaság tagja».

Vertical variant

The vertical variant has the same elements, but they are rotated with 90 degrees.

Annex 3 shows the vertical variant first, at the page top, under the heading "Lobogó:", and identifies all measurements: Width is half the height, and the coat of arms is off-centered by one third, and the stripes at the fly are one tenth high each (even though the diagram shows the yellow one to be larger, albeit both labelled "⅒").

The Coat of Arms

Its coat of arms is yellow shield charged with a red eagle with outstretched wings standing on three green hills over a blue part of the shield. The shield is surrounded by beech tree wreaths, and its name is written on a silver scroll over the shield.
The etymology of the name Arló derives from the Old Slavic word "sas". The eagle was the totem animal of the steppe peoples, and over the centuries it became a heraldic animal. The eagle with outstretched wings can also be found in the coat of arms of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county. Already in the early árpád period, the owners of the settlement depicted it as a heraldic animal. Hence the unbroken tradition of the eagle in the countryside. According to the Christian understanding, the eagle is a symbol of truth, embodying Christ himself. In the coat of arms of Arló, the blue shield base clearly refers to Lake Arlói, which was formed by silting. The green triple hill reflects the topographic conditions. Its triple division is related to numerology. Three is one of the most important sacred numbers.
The next symbol is the double cross. On the tower of the Catholic church of Arló, there is a double cross, which is a prominent symbol of the Catholic Church. The colors appearing on the coat of arms of Arló and the shields were applied taking into account the rules of heraldry. The shield is surrounded by beech tree wreaths in accordance with local characteristics, which are connected to the three-pile depicted in the shield.
The coat of arms was adopted by the same Decree in 1999.
