Overview

Bácsbokod is a large village and municipality in Bács-Kiskun County, in the Southern Great Plain region. The Danube River (River Duna) flows 20 kilometers to the west of the village.
The first written record dates back to the time of King Endre I, when the name of the settlement of Büked was already mentioned in a document recording a property dispute. During the time of King Saint Ladislaus, the Büked plain belonged to the abbey of Pécsvárad, through which an important trade route ran.
After the Battle of Mohács, the Turks temporarily occupied Baja and its surroundings, including Bököd. The Turkish army, which marched south from Buda, devastated the entire Danube-Tisza region. Dalmatian and Serbian refugees arrived in the region to escape the atrocities of the Turks.
The village was given a new name on 07 March 1904, Bácsbokod.
