Presentation of Seissan

Seissan (1,099 inhabitants in 2021; 1,856 ha) is a commune in the Gers department.

Many remains discovered at a place called Gleyzia, on the right bank of the Gers, attest to a Gallo-Roman presence. The old Seissan has disappeared, but a castelnau (new castle) was built in the 12th century, on the left bank of the Gers. Only the tower remains ftom the castle, erected by the abbots of Faget- Abbey, owners of the city of Seissan. The bastide was founded in 1266 by Count Bernard IV of Astarac, in association with Abbot Bernard II, representing the abbey of Faget-Abbatial. The bastide, built around the castle, received a charter of customs in 1288 but developed little thereafter. Around 1775, the construction of the new road leading from Auch to the south in the Aure valley profoundly modified the structure of Seissan, which then grew along this new axis.

The former commune of Le Garrané was absorbed by the commune of Artiguedieu in 1822, and Artiguedieu merged with Seissan in 1972. The former commune of Auriac united with Seissan in 1829.
