The municipality of Sabiote (3,742 inhabitants; 11,211 ha) is located in the province of Jaén.

Symbols of Sabiote

The Municipality of Sabiote in the Province of Jaen, Andalusia, has its own symbols. The coat of arms was adopted by the Ayuntamiento on 12.08.1905, and ratified on 30.04.1943, and the flag is the result of public competition held in 2017.

Coat of arms:

Description: Or, a bend sable, overall a cross of Santiago gules. A bordure compony of Castile and León. Crest: a closed royal crown.
Meaning: The coat of arms was designed by Manuel S. Lac, known for his lack of rigor when assigning these symbols to the town councils that paid for his services. The band is justified as a tribute to Juan de Zúñiga , the first knight to scale the walls of the Sabiote fortress in 1229. The Cross of Santiago represents this military order, which played a significant role in that battle. The border of Castile and León was supposedly granted by the Catholic Monarchs in recognition of the assistance provided by the inhabitants of Sabiote during the conquest of Granada.

Description: Rectangular flag divided diagonally into two triangles. The upper triangle, at the fly, is white with a red lion at the top. The lower triangle, at the hoist, is red with a yellow castle at the bottom. The local coat of arms is in the center of the flag. The author is Luis González.
