The municipality of Flor da Serra do Sul (4,725 inhabitants in 2010; 255 sq. km)
is located in southwestern Paraná, on the border with Santa Catalina, 520 km of
Curitiba. The municipality was established by State Law No. 9,300 of 18 June 1990 from parts of the municipalities of Salgado Filho, Marmeleiro and
Barracão, and inaugurated on 1 January 1993. The tradition says that the
place was named by the customers of the café owned by Lídio Martins as a true
mountain's flower (Flor da Serra). "do Sul" (Southern) was added during the
legal procedure for the emancipation of the municipality.
The flag of
Flor da Serra do Sul was designed in 1980 [but this would predate for more
than 10 years the establishment of the municipality] by Mayor João Pedro. The
colours symbolize the environment and natural resources of the region.
