Region Hauts Bassins (2,238,375 inhabitants in 2019; 2,534,400 ha) is composed of the three provinces of Houet, Kénédougou and Tuy. Capital is Bobo-Dioulasso, the country's second most populated town and business capital.
On the regional emblem, the 33 stars refer to the 33 departments that compose
the region. The central element is surrounded by the two most significant crops
in Burkina Faso, sorghum and maize. Burkina Faso was in 2014 the world's 10th
producer of sorghum (1.7 million ton). Production of maize increased from 1.13
million ton in 2011 to 1.710 million tonnes in 2019.
