The pre-2014 city flag, based on this photograph. A white field with a black wagon wheel in the center, the word "INDEPENDENCE" in red letters below, and the motto "Queen City of The Trails" in script above.

Independence MO held a flag contest in 2014, but I suspect that the winner
was never adopted by the city council. All photos of flags used since 2014 are
of the "old" flag.
A photo of the "old" flag is in this article about
the contest from 2014:

Attached are my drawings of the "old"/currently used flag. There are at
least 2 different versions, the one being used now and the version used is this

Independence, Missouri adopted a new city flag in June 2014: www.ci.independence.mo.us/Story.aspx?id=3902
Dave Fowler, 24 August 2014
This is the recently adopted city flag, taken from www.ci.independence.mo.us/Story.aspx?id=3902. I copied the flag off the website and brought it to FOTW standard. According to the flag's designer, "the symbolism of the wagon wheel and three stars ... representing the Santa Fe,
California, and Oregon trails and the City's role in the westward expansion of the United States. The colors of red, white, and blue provide a connection to the United States and Missouri flags, are a tribute to President Harry S. Truman
[from Independence], and honor an American city which shares A NAME with the Declaration of Independence."
