The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
(UN Women) is a United Nations entity working for gender equality and
the empowerment of women. UN Women was established by the merger of
the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM, established in
1976) and other entities (namely Division for the Advancement of Women
(DAW, established in 1946), International Research and Training
Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW, established in 1976)
and Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of
Women (OSAGI, established in 1997)) by approval of the United Nations
General Assembly on July 2, 2010 and became operational in January
2011. Their flag is their logo on an UN Blue background.
