Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a fess Or fretty Purple, on chief a 5-point star Or, on base an open book Argent. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "UNIÃO DAS FREGUESIAS DE COVILHÃ E CANHOSO".
Meaning:
The golden star probably is representing the former Canhoso Commune. It might also refer to the Serra Estrela (= starry mountains), a local ridge. Furthermore it may be an attribute of St. Mary, who is local patron saint of the former Santa Maria Commune, as Our Lady of Immaculate Conception also of the former Conceição Commune, finally as Our Lady of Fátima of Canhoso. The fess fretty is taken from the arms of Conceiçição, modified in tincture. The book as an unusual attribute of St. Peter is representing the former São Pedro Commune. The former São Martinho Commune is not represented despite of the star for the ridge.
