Shield Or a chevron embattled in base Gules and a pine tree eradicated and fruited Vert over all. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "PINHO - BOTICAS".
Meaning:
The word pinho is a collective noun in Portuguese, akin to English "pine", refering to its timber, lumber, wood (all senses) and, as a synecdoche, to individual trees (for which is commonly used instead the derivative pinheiro, a common noun). Pine trees, although currently prevalent, were introduced in this region only in the late 19th century, replacing slow growth oak and chestnut with Pinus pinaster for the sawmill industry. It is known that the word pinho in this toponym is much older and its root is Celtic, not Latin, being cognate with regular Portuguese penha, meaning "cliff" or "crag". Therefore, the pine in these arms is partly punning.
