Meaning:
The base wavy is a representation of the Douro River. The hound is an attribute of St. Domingo, the local patron saint. The chalices stand for the production of fine port wine in the area. The Maltese cross is referring to a donation to the order of Malta and the foundation of a commandery of the order, granted by King Dom Sancho I (1185 - 1211), born 1154.

Presentation of Fontelo

Fontelo was upgraded to town rank in 1999, three years after the coat of arms with 4 visible towers was created, which seems fishy. It is one of the ten communes of Armamar Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes; it had 602 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 7,52 km².
