Blazon: På raud grunn ein gull liljekross. In English: Gules a cross fluery
or.
Approved by the royal resolution of 22 July 1983 after a drawing by Elsa Norunn
Håheim Nydal after a proposal by Magnus Hardeland. [c2j87]
The arms are loosly inspired by the arms of Audun Hugleiksson from Hegranes in
Jølster, who died in 1302, an important figure in Norwegian politics of the
period. In his seals he used a shield with a rose, surrounded with a double
tressure fleury-counterfleury. The tressure was a grant from the Scottish king.
His seal shows him as a rider holding a shield with his arms, as on a 1295
treaty he arranged between Norway and France, as an emissary there. The lesser
seal, on the reverse, shows only the shield of the arms. Artefacts from his
castle have fleury iron-cast ornaments that provided a further idea on adopting
the municipal arms of this form.
