Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.flagchart.net
adopted 9 Feb 1962
Landsmeer is a municipality north of Amsterdam in Noord-Holland province.
It used to be a rural community, part of the 16th century "Waterlandse
Unie", which tried to compete commercially with its neighbours Amsterdam
and Monnickendam. This is reflected in the Coat of Arms (see Ralf
Hartemink's site), which contains a swan with a golden necklace and
a bundle of 7 arrows, representing the seven municipalities which were
part of this union. This Coat of Arms was used by several other municipalities -
Ralf Hartemink mentions Waterland, Broek in Waterland, Buiksloot and Ransdorp.
The swan symbolizes also the water, and the
water-fowl, so abundant in this region.
At present Landsmeer is a sleeping town for people who work in Amsterdam, notably the more well-to-do (the others have to sleep in Almere, Purmerend, Hoofddorp, etc).
I have slightly modified the flag-image on the Shipmate-site, to match
the description.
