The Defence Against Terrorism (DAT) COE provides subject matter expertise on how best to defend against terrorism. It also provides training on how best to counter terrorism, assists in the development of doctrine and helps improve NATOâ019s capabilities and interoperability. In addition to publishing the Defence Against Terrorism Review twice a year, DAT also holds conferences, workshops, symposiums and advanced training courses relating to defence against terrorism. DAT regularly participates in NATO Working Groups.
In order to support its work, DAT contains several departments: Education and Training, Support, Capabilities and Transformation. Education and Training mainly deals with courses, while Support is in charge of the operations of DAT COE. Capabilities is in charge of modelling and simulation, exercises, operations and intelligence, while Transformation is responsible for doctrines and policies, research and technology, concepts and lessons learned. Transformation has contributed to several concept doctrine developments, including the Countering Asymmetric Threat Concept, the Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Doctrine, the Combined Joint Urban Operations Concept and the Extended Protect Cyber Defence Concept.
Founded by Turkey in 2005, DAT received NATO COE accreditation in 2006.
Sponsoring Nations include Bulgaria, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, the United Kingdom and the United States. In February 2010, Hungary announced its intention of becoming a Sponsoring Nation.
It is located in Ankara, Turkey.

Its flag is white with its blue disc emblem in the middle.
