The coat of arms of San Juan del Río was designed by Héctor Raúl Rojas López and adopted as official on 24 June 1984 in a council session, being adopted through a contest held by the Municipal Council under Municipal President Leopoldo Peralta Navarrete (1982-1985), asking for submissions from all around the Nation but it appears there was not much publicity. Description: To the sides of a rounded shield, bow shapes appear with rolled edges at the top. The shield is bordered in gold and divided into three sections. The upper section depicts the image of patron saint of the city San Juan Bautista holding a white flag over the Bridge of History (Puente de la Historia) of five arches established in 1710; this represents its history, through its evangelization and foundation. The lower-left section is a representation of the history before the colonization era, depicting an Otomí roundel, representing the settlement of Iztacchichimecapan. The lower-right section is quartered, depicting castles and lions, the coat of arms of Castile and León; representing the Spanish as the founders of the city. Under the shield is a ribbon reading "San Juan del Río".

Since the Municipality did not have a coat of arms, one was made to use on a banner at the 1965 Fair. It was never official. It depicts, over a scroll, an oval depicting the sun and the Bridge of History, along with the water under it and a cactus. At the bottom of the banner is a fringe.

In the late 1700's, a seal was seen on some books of San Juan del Río. It depicts, arched by the border at the top, "SAN JUAN DEL RIO" and a crowned shield placed in between the phrase, also having a ribbon emerging from it. The shield is quartered, and has castles and lions, with a fleur-de-lis shield in the center and at the bottom a small triangle depicting a pomegranate; this was the royal Spanish coat of arms from 1700 to 1868. Under it, the Bridge of History is depicted crossing the water.
