Even though the flag bears the abbreviation CAO.IRI ("IRI" standing for
Islamic Republic of Iran), its official website is
https://www.cao.ir. Also, it is an organization dependent to the former
"وزارت راه و ترابر" (English: "Ministry of Roads and Transportation of Iran"),
currently labeled "وزارت راه و شهرسازی"(English: "Ministry of Roads and City
Planning") (official website: https://www.mrud.ir).
CAO.IRI (as it is officially abbreviated) was established in August 1946 as
" ان اداره كل هواپيمايي كشوري نمود." (English: "The General Directorate of
National Aviation").
On October 11, 1949, the Civil Aviation Law was
approved by Parliament and the General Directorate of National Aviation came
under the supervision of the Ministry of Roads, under the new name Civil
Aviation Organization. In 1973 CAO changed its name to NAO, National Aviation
Organization (Persian: سازمان هواپیمایی كشوری ) and came under jurisdiction of
the (English: Ministry of War) until the advent of the Iranian Revolution, in
which it was transferred to the Ministry of Roads and Transportation of Iran.
