Bakonybél is a village in Veszprém County in Hungary near to
Town of Pápa (31 km south-east) in
the Valley of the Gerence Brook in the heart of the Northern
Bakony Mountains. The village has got 1559 inhabitants (1990
census), nearly all of them are Hungarians. Neighbouring
settlements are: Bakonyszücs, Ugod, Bakonyjákó,
Szentgál, Hárskút,
Pénzesgőr, Porva and Fenyőfő
villages. The first mention is from 1018, when a new Benedictine
monastery was found near to the formerly hermitage of St.
Günther and St. Gellert. The settlement was settled with German
and Slovakian serves in 1713 by the Abbey of Pannonhalma.
In 1910 Bakonybél was a village in the Zirc district of
Veszprém County. Number of inhabitants in 1910: 1.323; 1.306
(98,7%) Hungarian, 16 (1,2%) German and 1 (0,1%) other by mother
tongue, 1.304 (98,6%) Roman Catholic, 13 (1,0%) Jew and 6 (0,5%)
other by religion. The Coat of Arms relates to the conversion of
timber.
