Overview

Szigetszentmiklós is a town in Pest County, located in Budapest metropolitan area, south from Budapest in the Csepel Island along the Danube. It is seat of Szigetszentmiklós district.
The area and borders of the city have been inhabited for more than six thousand years. The oldest mention of the settlement is in the charter of Béla IV dated October 14, 1264. After the Turkish occupation, the inhabitants faced new trials: floods, fires devastated the village, and epidemics decimated it. In 1882, the construction of the flood protection dam next to the two Danube rivers began, and thus the centuries-old nightmare of annual flooding ended.
It became a large village in 1870. Szigetszentmiklós can primarily thank its proximity to Budapest and the industrial facilities that settled here for its development into a town.
Szigetszentmiklós is a 750-year-old settlement. It became a city on 01 January 1986.

The Coat of Arms

The town's coat of arms is a blue shield, with a rampant ram, the ancient emblem of the town, which refers to both the historical past and the animal husbandry that still exists in Szigetszentmiklós today. The ram's leg touches the cross-symbolizing Christianity, and the star above it refers to the Reformed religion characteristic of the town.
The coat of arms was adopted by the same Municipal Decree.
