Overview

Pécel is a town in Gödöllő district of Pest county, Budapest metropolitan area. It is situated outside Budapest's 17th district a little over 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Budapest city centre.
The area of Pécel was inhabited long before the Common Era. During the Hungarian conquest, the Locsod-puszta, the neighborhood of Pécel, was the southern border of the settlement of the Slavic population. The village structure was consolidated in the 11th century and the Tarján tribe established itself in the county. The first documented mention of the settlement appears in the family name of Demeter Péceli, a Pest county serf judge, in 1335, whose landholding and probably permanent residence were here. The first documented mention of it as a village, as Peczel, dates back to 1338. When Buda and Pest fell into Turkish hands in 1541, Pécel also fell into Ottoman hands. At that time, part of the population went into hiding.
Pécel lost its city status in the middle of the 19th century, which it regained in 1996.

The Coat of Arms

image by Zoltan Horvath, 10 January 2025

The coat of arms is a shield with a pointed base, at the bottom of the blue shield head a green triple mill touching the edges of the shield, below it a silver, wavy band (river). The right part of the divided lower two-thirds of the shield, cut seven times with red and silver, in the red field on the left, on a green ground, a golden lamb turned to the right, looking back with its head, with its raised right hand a black patriarch holding a diagonal cross.
During the design of the coat of arms of Pécel, the selection of the elements of the coat of arms was helped by the rich historical and cultural tradition of the settlement. In the coat of arms, the cuts refer to the landowner Chrouy-Chanel family, the shield shape to the Szemere family, the two main colors of the shield - red and blue - to the Ráday family.
The river is a preserved motif of the old coat of arms, the lamb symbolizes Christianity.
Its designer is Zsuzsanna Pannonhalmi.
The coat of arms was adopted by the same Municipal Decree in 2003.
