Overview

ócsa is a town in Gyál district of Pest county, Budapest metropolitan area. It is situated 30 kilometers south of Budapest.
ócsa has been continuously inhabited since the árpád era. Its name was first mentioned in a document in 1235 under the name Alza. The church was originally built in the 13th century by the Premonstratensians for use as a monastery.
During the 16th century the village was reformed and the structure was given to the village for use as a public place of worship. ócsa became the district seat around 1856. From the 1950s, a significant number of ócsa residents became industrial workers commuting to the capital, and many people settled again in the parceled-off areas beyond the railway.
The settlement became a town in 2005.

The Flag

The flag of the town consists of two parts, the hoist part is red charged with a black church. The right of the flag is alternating by four red and four white horizontal stripes. The flag is decorated with red and green triangles (wolf-teeth) on its upper and lower edges. Ratio is 2:3.
Its symbolism is written in the Decree:
„ócsa City is an árpád-era settlement. Its namesake, the old ócsa, was, according to our legends, the lord of the Hungarian stud farm and belonged directly to the people of árpád's house. Therefore, when depicting the symbols of our flag, we go back to the oldest roots, to árpád. The árpád stripe, as its name suggests, is connected to our first prince. árpád Simon Kézai, as the son of Emese blessed by Turul, derived his offspring from the Turul clan. According to our legends, the people who went to war were led by Turul, and in the era of the leaders, they depicted their flags in black on a red background. A thousand years ago, with the adoption of Christianity, the religious world of our people changed, therefore the place of the Turul totem animal on the ócsa flag is taken by our Christian monument church, depicted in black on a red background, as if bowing our heads to the beauty of our ancient legend.”
The flag was adopted by Municipal Decree No. 10/1996. (IX.4.) on 28 August 1996.
