Overview

Gyöngyöspata is a town in Gyöngyös district of Heves County, under the Mátra mountain ranges.
The settlement is located in an area inhabited since the 7th century. According to Anonymus, it gets its name from Chief Pata, who is the ancestor of the later King Sámuel and the Aba clan. Pata had a castle built from burned clay on the hill above the settlement. Next to the castle, St. Peter's church was built in 1010, which became the seat of the archdeacon. The settlement is mentioned for the first time in 1234 in a deed that has survived to this day. In 1241, the Tatars destroyed the church. The church of Nativity of Mary built in the present-day center of the settlement around 1305. Until the 14th century, Gyöngyöspata was the second most populous settlement in Heves county, which was given the status of a market town.
Gyöngyöspata was granted town status on 15 July 2013. It is one of the smallest cities in Hungary. Its polulation is about 2200 residents.

The Coat of Arms

Its current coat of arms has quite complicated design with its various elements placed on a quartered shield. The shield is topped by the Hungarian Holy Crown. The first quarter is red with a white patriarchal cross placed on green hills. These elements are the same as the Hungarian coat of arms. The second quarter is blue with crossed keys, representing the church-founding apostle and the keys that most express his personality. The third quarter depicts a white hunting dog on a green background with its right paw raised and looking left, with a golden bunch of grapes in its mouth. Under the hunting dog, four golden heraldic lilies depicted on green field. Above the hunting dog is the “Raven” coat of arms of the Hunyadi House. The fourth quarter is green, and it depicts purple wine in a vertical sloe in the middle of a golden stylized barrel, with golden grape clusters on both sides. Between upper and lower quarters, the Hungarian motto reads: „HASS, ALKOSS, GYARAPíTS” (Profit, Create, Grow!) on its dividing stripe. There is a blue ribbon below shield. These golden letters and numbers represent the Latin and runic name of the settlement, the years of the first written mention of the settlement (1234) and the inauguration of town (2013), as well as the Latin cross separating the two inscriptions and emphatically recalling the Roman Catholic faith.

Previous Coat of Arms

During the village era, between 1991 and 2013, a different coat of arms was used. It depicted a white hunting dog with a golden arrow and a bunch of grapes in its mouth. The dog and the cross refer to the color of the árpád House, silver. The lower part of the shield depicted blades of grass on a green field. A white cross is placed in the upper right corner of the coat of arms.
