Presentation of Adria

Adria, established in 1882 in Rijeka, was the leading steamship company of the Croato-Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, connecting Rijeka with north European, western Mediterranean and Southamerican harbours. It managed 34 steamships. After the First World War, the company was given to Italy and by 1937 it was merged with the Tirrenia company.
An other company named Adria was established in 1871 in Trieste, but closed in 1878.

House flag of Adria

The house flag of Adria, as shown in Larousse commercial illustré (1930) [hok30] and in All about ships and shipping (1934) [har34], is blue with a red saltire and overall a yellow anchor, the initial "A" and a five-pointed star at the top.

The first flag of Adria, as seen on a photo, was green with a white oval containing the company's emblem, which includes, in front of the red initial "A", a rather complex red anchor inscribed at the crossbar "ADRIA", together fouled with a red cord, all topped with St. Stephen's crown in its proper colours, and on a red arched ribbon beneath white inscription "Hazának Használj" (Hungarian: Be useful to your country).

Siplified, erroneous rendition of the house flag of Adria - Image by Željko Heimer, 2 April 2018

Western sources, such as Griffin (1895), under Adriatic Hungarian Steam Navigation Co., and Lloyd's book of house flags and funnels (1912) [llo12], under Royal Hungarian Sea Navigation Company Adria, show a very wimplified version of the emblem, which is reduced to the red letter "A" over a fouled blue anchor.
