It is a blue-white-red tricolour in proportions 1:2:1 with centred arms exceeding the white stripe (see left image above) or in the white stripe (see right image above).

The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories, to which the county historically belonged: the eagle of the city of Mühlhausen, the capital of the county. The millstones are canting (Mühle = mill). The lion of the Landgraves of Thüringen in the second quarter, in the third quarter the wheel of the Archbishopric of Mainz and the attire in the fourth quarter of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.
