Altenstadt Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, on a mount Vert an eradicated oak Vert with acorns Or.
Meaning:
Oak and acorn are canting for the names of the former settlements Über-Aichheim and Minder-Aichheim or Nieder-Aichheim, which means "home of oaks". The settlements had been located in local oak woods. The Lords of Aichheim were first mentioned in 1128. They became extinct in 1330.Their successors had been the Lords of Rechberg, who built a castle from 1420 until 1460 and founded a new settlement. The former settlements since then were called "Alte Stadt", i.e.old town, later "Altenstadt". The new settlement was called "Illereichen". The market town had no proper arms. Town seals displaying oaks are known since the 2nd half of the 19th century. The arms were based on seals. The tinctures were added by Otto Hupp around 1925. The name of the town had been Illereichen until 1903, Illereichen-Altenstadt between 1903 and 1972 and Altenstadt since 1972.

It seems, the arms were adopted without approval by the local council during the 2nd half of the 19th century.
