Altensteig Coat of Arms

Shield Or, issuant from base a mount Vert with a way Or, leading to a castle Argent with port and windows sable and roofs Gules, in chief an impending attire Sable.
Meaning:
Altensteig gained city rights in the 14th century. Since 1398 the Margraves of Baden had been the local rulers. Therefore local seals displayed the Badenian bend, until the city became a dominion of Württemberg in 1603. In 1604 the new image appeared first, but with the attire in base. Since 1605 (Siebmacher) the attire is in chief. The "old castle" probably was built by the reeves of Altensteig in the 12th century. The castle still exists. The way up to the castle (German: Steig) is a canting element. The tinctures were fixed in 1935.
