figure inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
§2. The municipal flag of
Descanso obeys this general rule, being quartered in saltire, thzat is,
constituted by stripes that connect the flag's cantons and cross each other in
the center [...]
§3. The coat of arms applied on the flag represents the
municipal government while the yellow rectangle inscribing it represents the
town proper as the municipal seat. Yellow is a symbol of glory, splendor,
greatness and knowledge. The yellow stripes charged with red stripes that start
from the rectangle's corner and quarter the flag represent the spread of
municipal power all over the territory. Red is a symbol of dedication,

Article 7.
In compliance with heraldic rules, the municipal flag shall have the official
dimensions prescribed for the national flag, 14 units in width on 20 units in

Article 19.
The coat of arms of Descanso, designed by the
heraldist Arcinoé Antonio Peixoto de Faria,is described as follows in proper
heraldic language:
A Samnite shield surmounted by a six-towered mural crown
argent. Argent a panoply composed of fasces of rifles sable ensigned with
national flags with a resting net ["rede de descanso"] gules connecting their
staffs in chief crossed swords sable superimposed to a kepe azure in base a
drum azure outlined or.
The shield supported dexter by a maize plant and
sinister by a wheat plant all proper tied behind a scroll gules containing in
letters argent "DESCANSO" surrounded by the date "16/12/1956".
The coat
of arms has the following symbolic interpretation:
a) The Samnit shield,
used to represent the arms of Descanso, was the first style of shield
introduced to Portugal by French influence, inherited by the Brazilian heraldry
to evoke the colonizing race and main builder of the nation;
b) The mural
crown surmounting the shield is the universal symbol of domains' coats of arms;
argent (silver) with six towers, four visible in perspective view, it
classifies the town as of third rank or municipal seat.
c) Argent (silver)
is a symbol of peace, friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious
feeling.
d) The panoply evokes the historical rationale for the town's
foundation, explaining the toponym [Portuguese, "rest"], as a military camp set
up by the famous Prestes Column, which established it in 1925 for a long rest
period.
e) Vert (green) is a symbol of honor, civility, courtesy, glee, and
abundance; sable (black) is a symbol of austerity, prudence, moderation, and
firmness; azure (blue) is a symbol of justice, nobleness, perseverance, zeal
and loyalty; or (yellow) is a symbol of glory, splendor, greatness and wealth;
and gules (red) is a symbol of dedication, patriotic love, audacity,
intrepidity, courage and valiance.
f) The outer ornaments, maize and wheat,
represent the main products of the generous and fertile soil.
i) On a scroll
gules (red), in letters argent (silver) "DESCANSO" surrounded by the date of
its political emancipation, "16/12/1956".
