The municipality of São José (250,181 inhabitants in 2020, therefore Santa Catarina's 4th most populous municipality; 15,045 ha) is adjacent to Florianópolis.

The flag of São José is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 846 promulgated on 27
September 1972.
Article 2.
The municipal flag features, on a red
color, which symbolizes martyr in the Catholic Church, the coat of arms of the
municipality prescribed by Municipal Law No. 846 promulgated on 25 February
1960, and, on the right, three stars: a greater star representing the seat of
the municipality, forming the first district, and two smaller stars representing
the second and third districts, Barreiros and São Pedro de Alcantâra,
respectively.
Every time new districts will be established, they will be
represented by identical stars right of the coat of arms.
Article 3.
The dimensions of the municipal flag are 161 cm in length on 131 cm in width.

Municipal Law No. 1,552 promulgated on 27
June 1984 substituted Article 3 with the following one.
Article 3.
The
dimensions of the flag are 14 units in width on 20 units in length.

The coat of arms of São José is prescribed
by Municipal Law No. 403 promulgated on 25 February 1960.
Article 1.
The coat of arms of the municipality of São José shall have the following
characteristics.
I - Portuguese shield, divided per pale, the field dexter
divided per fess.
II - The field sinister purpure, recalling that the
municipality is the birth place of one of the two Brazilian princes of the
Church, charged with the staff of the saint who gave his name to the
municipality.
III - The field dexter in chief azure an escutcheon gules
recalling the coat of arms of Terceira island, from which came the Azorean
settlers of the municipality; in base on a field argent a black German eagle
recalling that the first German colony in the state was located in the
municipality.
IV - The shield surmounted by a three-towered mural crown or,
symbol of a town.
V - As supporters, sinister a dolphin argent and dexter a
cornucopia or pouring plants pproper, recalling the maritime and agricultural
activities in the municipality.
VI - A blue scroll inscribed "São José"
argent surrounded by the dates of establishment and elevation to a town, "1756"
and "1833", respectively.
