The municipality of Terra Nova do Norte (11,302 inhabitants; 2,302 sq. km) is
located in northern Mato Grosso, 670 km of Cuiabá.
Terra Nova do Norte
(lit. "North New Land") was founded in 1978 as a colony aimed at a resettling
colonists expelled from Kaingang lands. The new colony was organized by the
Lutheran pastor Norberto Schwantes. An area of 435,000 ha, including 1,062
plots and nine villages was delimited by the Cooperativa Agrária de Canarana.
The colony was originally very isolated, since the BR163 road heading to
it was not achieved yet. The discovery of gold completely disorganized the
colony, while malaria killed most of its inhabitants. A new wave of
colonization was organized, so that the municipality of Terra Nova do Norte
was established by State Law No. 4,995 of 13 May 1986, seceding from the
municipality of Colíder, and inaugurated on 10 January 1987. The municipality
of Nova Guarita seceded in 1992, including the villages of Planalto, Nonoai
and Guarita. The name of the municipality reflects recent colonization. "do
Norte" was added for the sake of differentiation from other municipalities of
the same name in Bahia and Pernambuco.
The flag of Terra Nova do Norte is
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 95 of 3 January 1989. The flag shall have
the same proportions as the Brazilian national flag. The flag include
stripes, representing roads, converging to a star charged in the middle with
a gold pan and the date of establishment of the municipality, surrounded by
two garbs of grains. The pan represents gold panning, the main source of
income in the municipality. The grains represent agriculture and
cattle-breeding. Green represents the forests, blue represents the rivers,
yellow represents the mining resources. The white stripe placed at the
bottom of the flag represents peace and harmony; it is inscribed with the
motto "Trabalho e Progresso" (Work and Progress), very significant for the
development and growth of the municipality.
