The municipality of General Fernández Oro (usually, Fernández Oro; 8,629
inhabitants in 2010) is located in General Roca department, 500 km north-west of
Viedma. The town was named for its founder, General Manuel Fernández Oro
(1848-1919), a hero of the Paraguayan War and of the Conquest of the Desert.
The flag of Fernández Oro, unveiled on 25 September 2021, is horizontally
divided orange-green with a white triangle placed along the hoist and charged
with the Sun of May.
The flag was designed by Axel Córdoba (24 years), winner
of a contest organized by the municipality for the celebration of the 90th
anniversary of the foundation of the town; the contest, unanimously approved on
22 April by the Municipal Council, yielded some 80 proposals.
The orange
stripe represents courage, sacrifice and generosity, as well as sunrise.
The
green stripe represents agriculture, hope, natural resources and prosperity.
The triangle is a symbol of equality, fraternity and liberty. White is a symbol
of peace, unity, purity and honesty.
The Sun of May is "one of the most
important Argentine national emblems, featured on flags and coats of arms".
